What do you think? Drought? Grubs? Neighbor's dog? Oh, yeah, and it looks
like I need to mow it too. :P Well, at least I don't have any weeds (yet).
Actually this is just a test render as I learn to use eval_pigment (on a
bozo pigment). Great feature!
Thanks to Gilles Tran for the great grass macro!
Comments appreciated.

Cool! I'm trying to fix this on my real back lawn. Even though the
sprinkler covers the entire lawn, there's a well-defined bright circle of
green in the middle around where I put the sprinkler.
The image isn't bad as is, but for something with sharp shadows the sun
doesn't seem very strong. Highlights on the grass blades and reducing the
darkness between blades would add to it I think. I know you said this was
a test render for using eval_pigment but it seems just a few tweeks away
from being compelling realism.

I used radiosity on the first one, but my sky was not very bright. I
increased the ambient on the sky, made it a little more yellow, and added
some ambient to the green grass to help reduce sharp shadows in the grass
and simulate the slight translucency of the green blades. However, now the
extra light shows that I need to work on the dirt texture on the ball.

I like this one much better.
The ball looks like it has been used and abused, by lots of dirty hands.
Nice! Though, I think the scene needs *something* white or near-white, to
tell the eye that it's a full-brightness-range image; otherwise, it still
looks a bit like an under-exposed photo. Perhaps a few random patches of
the faded-white ball stripes could be made whiter?

Using 'phong 1' in your texture should look good with this image. How are
you getting the lighter patches? It's been a long time since I've used
Gilles' macro.
