I'm planning on building a deck in my backyard. Here is a render that
combines several of my mini projects. The lighting is using the HDR
lightdome macro I'm still playing with, lit using an HDR I made of my
actual backyard. The deck and furniture are just meshes. The grass,
bricks, siding and shingles are made from image maps (the bricks and siding
from actual photos of my house).

That's great man. I was talking to my parents about this over the 4th of
july weekened. They want to design and build a deck, i said i could do some
stuff with povray for them.

Yes, it's fun to do, especially if you can incorporate photos from the
actual site. FYI the deck modelling was done in AutoCAD.

Looks very nice! Do you have more of these decks to publish? Wanna see more
of them...

Greetings,

Sven

Only one deck (I only own one house...) But I can always run more renders
of the same deck. Perhaps this weekend if I get time. Imay even post
actual photosof the deck when it is constructed.

Wow!

Do you use AutoCAD for this? I've been wanting to render my house in
POV-Ray, but just not sure how to build the model.... my house looks too
complicated to begin modelling it. I'm scared I'll have to design each
2x4, brick, panels by hand! (Forget each blade of grass!)

Nice multi-level deck design. I'm sure the building dept. would like to see
that render along with the plans. Good work.

Thanks. Actually, it's less than 2ft above grade, so I don't require a
permit here.

Yes, modelled in AutoCAD. It's really simple if you know AutoCAD (certainly
much easier than POV, especially since I already did the design drawings in
CAD). Then it's just a matter of exporting (usually to 3ds, then converting
to POV using another prog). Unless you really have a lot of time or can
macro it, don't model bricks, siding, etc. Just use image_maps (with normal
maps if wanted), it's a lot easier. As I said earlier, the siding and
bricks on this render are from actual photos of my house.

You can try Sketchup (free from Google). Blender is free as well. Programs
like AutoCAD, or even Rhino, are overkill for simple architectural stuff if
you don't already own them.

Well, you needn't. Texture maps work fine but the most extreme closeup, and
then you need only a couple of bricks anyway.
