Looking good so far!
Two things to mention: the portal on the right side seems to be more a
cornered portal than a curved one ;-) and the texture of the floor looks a
little too flat to me. maybe adding normals or using isosurface instead?

Thomas, this is looking very good. Bicycle aside, I can see this as a tower
in the Italian hills.
I do agree with the comment on the floor looking flat. Is this supposed to
be a tiled floor or one that is painted?
The frescoes look good. Is this an image map created by you?
I look forward to seeing more.

Well I sense that there is a lot more here than meets the eye. It is a
very powerful image as is and I sense a lot of (cerebral) potential in it.
It is in one sense a variation on your "Ice Cometh" picture in that you
use the tension of having a background scene framed and contexted by
foreground architecture. It is also an extension of your Copernicus
picture with it's sense of mysterious and underlaying geometries.

Yes indeed, Jim. All you say is true, and certainly not always consciously
attained. It is one of my fastest scenes (a couple of days) and I believe
that I am not going to modify very much, despite some shortcomings, as has
been stated by Roman and Tim. The deeper reason is for this isthat the scene
should be far from realistic and expressing a state of consciousness
familiar in dreams. There is something of de Chirico in it, although the
direct inspirator was a painting by Jos Janssens I saw in 1999, and of which
I had made a little sketch. It has stayed dormant for six years.
The frescos were provided by Adriano Del Fabbro with his Cloister.3ds
(1997), which can be found at the 3D Cafe. Indeed, the portal to the right
is angular as I intended it to be. Bicycle and lizzard come from the Taschen
object collection. The bicycle imposed itself on me as soon as the portal
took shape. In an otherwise empty (of human presence) environment, it
suggests somebody is there, near, and yet out of reach; familiar and yet
slightly menacing.

Thank you Roman!
I agree with your comments. The doorway to the right was kept intentionally
angular. However, I think now that I shall change that, as there are anyway
a few small corrections to make there.
The floor I am still unsure about. I am experimenting with a few options. I
want to keep it as much as possible like in this version.

Thank you , Tim!
Yes, the setting is definitely Italy. I googled a photograph from Tuscany
that exactly answered my needs [and took note of the photographer's name!]
The floor needs attention. It is tiled and I am currently experimenting with
a few options. Stay tuned. As said to Roman, I want to keep it as much as
possible similar to the present one
About the frescoes: see my answer to Jim Charter. The images are not very
high resolution, so you cannot zoom in too much, but as a background or a
middleground, they are quite effective. I don't know where they originally
come from. I suspect that they are Italian too.

Very nice image Thomas.
Some suggestions:
The floor looks too new a bit too industrial for such a building. You are an
expert with layered textures, than you can do very better.
The image map with the dance is skeleton seems to ben enlarged on the X
axis.

Well, the floor *is* (I should say *was*, because I have changed it) a
layered texture, but it is too smooth. I have changed it now, by adding a
normal to the tiles, but in doing that I could not keep the layered
textures, so I changed to simpler ones. See the next version soon.
Concerning the image map, yes you are correct... I had a problem with uv
mapping it on the cylinder portion (Poseray) where it seemed stretched out
originally. This way I could correct it more or less. What you also might
see here, is some deformation at the edge of the camera. It is wide angle.

A new version of the Portal.
Two features have been added; two features have been changed! Find the
differences :-)
