Hi all!
This is an enhanced version of my WIP "babel tower". Now with :
* a sky,
* no annoying darker ring close to the horizon,
* an area_light instead of a point light,
* no sand flooding the lowermost cells,
* glowing beads more randomly distributed instead of being just stuck in 1
out of 3 corners in their cells,
* a more convincing normal for the walls.

Rendering time : 36 h 20 min on an AMD Athlon XP 2800+. I had to lower
somewhat the radiosity settings so that it would not take one week to
render. No artifacts that i can truly notice, except for the slight shadows
right at the foot of the tower on the left. It definitely looks more
"sundrenched" than v 1. I'll have to render a "night time" version of it...
this is my next item on the to-do list. Otoh, i might start working on
something else before... Oh, i forgot to say: comments are, as always, very
welcome!!!

I like it very much. Two things I'd change are the sand texture (looks
more like whipped cream with honey, IMHO :) and the placing of the
tower. Placing it near the border of the image and perhaps lying a
single sphere outside it in the desert would give the image some kind of
story. But keep that piece of horizon visible, that's really nice!

lol! My desert looks like a dessert... lets set the followup to
povray.recipes.pastries! More seriously, you are definitely right,
basically i had some granite texture to the sand, but then i boosted the
lighting to get some highlights in the sand on the left, and the texture
kind of vanished...

I'm pretty happy with the small piece of sky, i believe it gives a sense of
immensity to the pic. Now, the tower is too much "in the center"... Thanks
for the suggestions, right now a night view is rendering, i had some
trouble to get a dim lighting right, but i believe it should now be ok.

building shape was eluding me until I saw this one. Really twists on my eyes 
to see the "tower". My attention gets drawn more to the maze-like appearance 
and loses me in it, but I wouldn't change the perspective from this anyhow!

Many thanks! The perspective sure is unusual, i started with a plain camera,
then i realized the scene was lacking dynamism, and i wondered "how would
it look like if it was a aerial pic of an actual ancient building in the
National Geographic ?" My answer was ultra_wide_angle camera, i'm glad you
liked it too!
And, i second your thought about the maze-like appearance: in fact this can
be seen as a kind of 3 dimensional maze.
