Greetings all

My take on Escher's "Double Planetoid" print... in early development. This
is what that pesky tetrahedral boulder was for.

To-do list: make the rock slightly larger and sort out the bridge to allow
for it, make the windows smaller and more numerous, steepen the wall facing
onto the bridges, add detail to the buildings (windowframes, doors, benches
etc), add trees and bushes to the rock, add human figures to the buildings,
get rid of those pesky isosurface protrusions on the tips of the rock...
phew!

The basic boulder and building geometry is OK, and I think I'm happy with
the radiosity settings.

Very nice, it's a very 'touchable' looking model, but what is the scale of
the image?  When I first saw it I got the impression I could pick it up in
my two hands.  Obviously placing some sized objects like the trees will
give it an immediate scale, so maybe that will correct itself.  Also
perhaps some more small-scale roughness of the boulder?  Looks good though.
 Did you use a poly mesh for the buildings or is it all CSG?

I love it! as an Escher fan myself, i always love to see his work continued
in raytracing. I think you got the proportions right, and the lighting is
vivid, creating strong, realistic contrast. As for the "toy model" look,
i'd suggest either a very slight fog, or a more diffuse lighting maybe? Or,
we just need to wait and see further work done on the sky :) I'd love to
see a light source right behind the planetoid and a very shallow media
casting a halo around it... Just my random thoughts on your pic. Very good
starting point, whatever way you go, i long to see the results!

I like the effect but there seems to be a piece of isosurface floating
in space just off the bottom-right corner of the planetoid. Is this
intentional? I think it detracts slightly.

As others have said, more of a sense of scale would make it look less
like a toy. But perhaps that is just what you are aiming for...

Yes, that's my intention. I find that clearly recognizable objects or
features always help with scale. Trees, shrubbery and people will hopefully
make all the difference. There's also a crackle paving pattern on the
floors, but it's pretty much invisible at this resolution.

Good ol' CSG. It's one of those scene files that nobody else could ever
comprehend... :)

Oh, yes! I hadn't noticed that. The crackle function does appear to want to
escape somewhat at the vertices. I think I'll have to experiment with
different functions for the rock texture...

One more for the to-do list...

That reminds me that I still have that WIP of Escher's "Still Life and
Street". It's been a WIP for more than 2 years, though, being on hold
for quite some while now :(
