Here is the Goban to go with the Go stones. Time to learn some new POV
features for me (superellipsoid and use of hamapatch at a very low
level...). I do not know why I get these strange artifacts at the end of
two of the floor planks (near the left foot).
The Goban texture tried to imitate Kaya wood. The floor texture is the
standart T_Wood24 from woods.inc.
Comments and remarks more than welcome !
The game is the last one played by Honinbo Shusai Meijin. His opponent, the
young Kitari Minoru won. It is still considered as a turn in Go history. It
gave rise to a wonderful novel by the Nobel Prize Yasunari Kawabata called
"The Master, or the Go Tournament" (Le maitre ou le tournoi de Go). It is
shown here after the 120th stone, that is when white sealed its defeat.

I love the lighting!

hmm, they look familiar to me. My suggestion: use rounded boxes for the floor
instead of superellipsoids.

cu!

rounded boxes are faster and mostly similar in looks, at least in this case.
Another suggestions would be to model a few unique floorboards as meshes or
patches, then each time you place one, randomly pick which one to place. it
would give some variation.

nice picture. it's a good improvement. as Zeger said, the lighting is really
nice.

Very nice, Sylvain!
Perhaps a tiny little bit of normals on the floor planks would give some
structure to the texture?

I also think that it would benefit from some small, random rotations of the
woodgrain on the various boards, and also some lighten/darken of the
textures on individual boards. The floor looks just a bit too uniform right
now.

Thanks for the comments ! Here is a new version with an improved floor. I
tried to add a couple of knots using warp { black_holes ...} but I don't
seem to be able to get the right settings for now. I hope it looks nicer,
although one might think the Goban belongs to a maniac as it is perfectly
aligned with the planks and the wall ;o)
What do you think ?

The floor is MUCH better! Looking at my hardwood floor, I see that there are large
tint variations
within most planks: from golden tan to almost black. Knots are usualy very dark.
Just put a small y rotation to the goban, less than 2 degrees should be OK.
