Please be gentle: not only am I posting my first image to this board, I'm
also posting an image generated by an extension I'm writing.

If you look at the attached image, it's easy to see that the reflected image
in the sphere looks better, "more real" than the object itself.  Is this
something I need to set differently with regards to lights? Or is there
another setting I forgot about?

I am not sure what you mean by more or less real, but you should at
least use anti-aliasing to get rid of the 'staircases' and other
artifacts.

Well, the thin ring on the top of the CD Player is supposed to be reflective
silver, but it looks pure white in the direct view, but looks metallic in
the reflection.

I'll try rendering it once with AA and see how it works.  However, while I'm
learning, I render everything w/o AA and other scenes I've tried (demos,
people's posts in here) still look better, so there's gotta be something
I'm missing in my SDL.

Maybe it's to bright. The reflecting sphere is dark and this enable the metallic
reflection to show. 
In the direct view, it reflect the, maybe to bright, sky. If you look at the various
metals finishs, 
you'll notice taht they have high ambient values, more than those usualy used, at
least by me.

I would agree with this diagnosis. If you drop the ambients, or the actual
color, of the parts of the player, it might no longer seem too bright. The
other thing you might try is putting the camera at the sphere's location,
and comment out the sphere. This will help if it is just the positions of
the lights.
