Just boxes, cylinders, toruses and spheres, nothing else. The window area
takes longer to render than the rest, probably due to some inefficient
difference operations. Would it be better to subtract the cut-outs from
each elementary shape rather than one big union group from another big one?

Work-in-progress, for a larger image I am making. I will use a number of
these cars, all of them seen from a distance so they don't need too much
detail. Does anything look weird? Comments are welcome.

You can try various options and see what works best.

The hood looks a little to boxy. The front end seems to extent to much past the front
wheels, in
that era, the front bumper was just clearing the front wheels.
It's normal that the windows take more time than the rest, transparency + reflection,
plus you see
the interior details and alsi, I presume, reflections. You may try using one object to
cut off the
holes for both sides at once, one for the front side windows, one for the back sides.
If the cars are far away, you may possibly remove the glass and gain some little time.

Very impressive modelling with primitives!

Maybe. The unions should only include objects that will be affected by the
subtraction. Try to isolate the CSG operation to the exact location
where its needed. If you're asking whether or not to split up the unions
completely, I'm not sure. Maybe it will render faster.
