Hi;

well, it's actually the second serious image I have made with POVray, but
the first one posted here. It's not pure POVray, the fog is added with
PhotoShop Elements, so it's not media or anything fancy (I can't stand the
long rendering times). Also, the persons are from photographs. But, there
are spheres on a (sort of) checkered floor, so I hope it's OK for a first
image - lol.

POVray is a nice experience so far, and it's a nice community you have here,
hope I can contribute a little. I have tried other 3d programs, but for
various reasons they don't suit my needs so well.

How do you do the 'persons from photographs'?  They look very realistic.

It's a nice image, even more so for a first image.

I guess I don't see what was done in Photoshop that couldn't be done with 
POVRay - given the reflective bottoms on the spheres (I think, it's subtle) 
maybe doing the fog in POVRay might look better.  A thought ...

Did you take the person photograps on purpose?
Did you paste them with photoshop or as maped ojects in POV?
they are very well integrated.

Nice concept. Reminds me of some of Gilles Tran's work. As others have said,
the people are really integrated well; I had no idea they were from
photographs.

Those spotlights shouldn't be too hard to do within POV-Ray without slowing
things down a lot. The advantage would be that they wouldn't show up in
front of things that they should be behind. If you're interested, here's a
few pointers:

 - Don't use scattering media for them; you probably won't notice the
difference if you just use a combination of emission and absorption.
 - Don't fill the whole scene with media. Instead, use cone objects and use
a media density which falls off toward the edges.

Even with default sampling settings, the media could look just as good as
the post-processed effect you have now, and it shouldn't add more than a few
minutes to the rendering time. The only challenge is getting the
emission/absorption values and the density right.

Very impressive! I am curious to know how the persons were integrated in the
scene.

Thanks a lot for your comments, they make me feel welcome here.

I should have been more precise about the persons: they *are* photographs,
just pasted onto the POVray image in Photoshop Elements, and the shadows are
painted in manually.

Thanks for the tip on using emission and absorption for the spotlights,
Slime; I will look into it. It's a lot to learn at first, I haven't read
those pages in the manual yet, I think. (And the reference to Gilles Tran
is very kind of you, but out of place imo; I have a long way to go yet.)

John: sorry to disappoint you, but there are noe reflections on the bottom
of the spheres (if I understand you correctly); just specular light from a
spot below. The water at the bottom of the image does have reflection,
however. I had to increase the reflected light a bit in Photoshop Elements.

Marc: yes, the photos were done on purpose; I made the composition with
POVray first, then made a sketch of where the persons should be and then
took the photos. There is one person on each sphere, but the smallest ones
are hard to see on this image; I made a larger version first (20 x 30 cm at
200 ppi), and scaled it down for this forum.
