So, I'm playing around with media & lights inside of objects for those cool
shadows / rays etc, and I came up with the following images.
Now, there are what appear to be black shapes hanging in the media as well -
are those simply areas that aren't lit by the lights (ie, absolute
shadows)? If so, how could I make them stand out less? (I thought of
using area lights instead of point lights, but the render times are already
prohibitive...)

Is there any chance that the black shapes are shadows, projected on the
surface of your main object?

increase max_trace_level
global_settings { max_trace_level Level }
that's my guess, I had similar problems with a much simpler scene. Light
rays bounce around so much in media they can quickly pass the threshold.

Why is that? Is there another, similar scene posted here? If so, could you
point me to it (or at least let me know who did it, and I could search for
it). I'm sorry if this comes up often; I only just started looking in this
particular group.
