Thanks for your comments. I've been struggling with the tentacles looking a
bit too Christmas-tree like also. I'll probably try a few renderings with
them
glowing to see if the effect is better.

What about giving them some texture pattern, like spotted or leopard. A
bozo pattern may also be interesting correctly sized.
That with an interesting color_map. What about adding some pattern in
your function to break the regularness of the tantacles.
