I thought I might make a variation on the cliche RSoCP. I'm pleased with the
way the cylinders look. It's just a pitty circles don't fit together a bit
better! :)

Actually they do.
Your pattern has a coordination number of 4 but you can generate a 2d
circle packing with a coordination number of 6. Of course that would
not allow a checker color pattern any more.
