Well, the new IRTC round is Oppisites. I've decided to do a railway-themed
entry. I started modeling today and have made I think a good amount of
progress for a single afternoon. This is also the first bit of serious
POVing in a bit over a year. I've gotten a quite solid model of US railway
track (notice the fine details, such as the spikes and joints between
sections. I've also gotten a decent start on one of the locomotives for
the scene, a circa 1941 Alco RS-1. I've put three of them in the scene to
fill it in a bit, since there is no real scene at the moment, just a
plane. Texturing for the most part is pretty basic right now, but I love
the rust-over-black paint I cooked up for the railings on the engine. Any
comments most welcome!

Here's an image of the real thing:

And here's a detail from the full 1600x1200 render. This was using a
17x17, circular orient parrallel area light. Works great.

Looks good so far. However, the rails are usually attached to the ties by
plates. The plate goes onto the tie, the rail goes on the plate and a spike
is hammered through the plate, into the tie holding down the rail. All the
ones I have seen are very rusty compared to the rails. Check out the
following web site - http://www.akrailroad.com/track_assemble.html
In addition, all of the ties in real use are almost all a deep charcol
black in color from the creosote that covers them. This would create a
great texture component to your scene.

Excellent start Tyler. Fresh motivation is what the IRTC needs. Any
hint as to how you are going to tie this train into the round's topic
(unless I didn't look carefully enough at the image). Trains look like
they are huge modeling project. More so than aircraft, which I have
done a few of. Remember to divide your time equally amongst texturing
and lighting, in addition to modeling. You don't want to fall short in
one aspect of your image.

Not just that but there will be an historical compentent as well. The RS-1
was one of the early diesels, and the other train is either going to be a
very modern diesel, or a steam. I'm not sure whic.

Had a little time to work on it this morning. I've started to add some
finer details to it, most notably the access hatches for the diesel
engine. Also fixed a bug where the walkways along the side and the cab
were too narrow, by about 4". Not a huge difference, but the proportions
are better now.

Okay, this will be my last one for a while. Lots of improvements over the
last!

* - Much improved texturing on the engine (still no where no final, but
it's beginning to resemble dirty metal)
* - More modeling of engine details (radiator, exhaust, etc)
* - Tweaks of cab windows

Yes indeed. Your other images were too dark for me. This one shows some
detail and is lighter in appearance on my monitor.

      Nice.

Waaaay too dark. Can't see a thing -- just a big black blob. :-(

(Don't think it's _my_ monitor... Most images here show up fine.)
