Two of them, actually, as the ring with photons is as omnipresent in
early photon scenes are the sphere and checkered floor in a typical
raytracer.

Anyway, first "real" image in more than a year, post-processed for
contrast. It's desktop size, although I doubt anyone would want *this*
on one's desktop :)

Here we go.

What is the difference between a "real" image, and a fake one? By
wanting *this* on one's desktop, do you mean the image on a computer
desktop, or the sphere, and cylinder on a "real" desktop? I'm also
confused about why I like like it, and have a strange urge to put it on
my desktop. Maybe I should have taken my medication today.

By "real" I meant an image that is an image by itself. The sad truth
is that I hadn't rendered one in more than a year, maybe even two.
I've used POV for a lot of things but none of them had *any* artistic
value on their own (I am not saying this image does). Most of my POV
work was used as elements in sites I've designed, or was used for
other specific purposes, but not on their own.

The former :) And what I meant was that the image is just too bright
and contrasting for a wallpaper image.

Glad you like it.

Very bright, but pretty... :)

Very nice and effective, but the dark shadows demand radiosity, Also the
highlight on the sphere should be much brighter IMO.

Anyway really good for someone 'out of training'. ;-)

What a coincidence. I did this one about a year and a half ago. I actually
do use this for my desktop (I shrunk it down for this posting) and I really
like the muted wood tones and the contrasting photon effects. But I try not
to stare at it too much - the bright spots are pretty intense ;-)

Shouldn't there be a bit of smoke coming from the lensed
light spot? ;)

Radiosity + reflection + refraction on a K6III/400? I don't think so
:)

Thanks, I will consider this, but I don't want to lose the nice
photons that happened to end up there.

Thanks :)

What, don't you have a few free weeks where you don't need to use your
computer? ;)

It won't necessarily be that slow, try for example the 'Radiosity_Fast'
settings in rad_def.inc or even use higher error_bound.
