I've made a cheap and dirty mesh macro that creates mountain peaks. It
isn't bad, but it isn't great either, and I'm sure it's horribly
inefficient.
Basically, it creates an even mesh of triangles in a square, raises the
height of the vertices according to a fractal landscape, and then
dampens the edges in a circle around the center of the mesh, either
linearly or based on a sine wave.
Macro and sample code posted in povray.binaries.scene-files.
