Inspired by Rafal I decided to combine some imagemaps and heightfieds.
What I did is that I took a picture of a butterfly, separated it from
the background, approximated the contour with line segments and filled
up the interior with triangles. Then I generated a heightfield with
an approximately round body and slightly rotated wings. The heightfield
was used as an offset for my triangles and I used ofcourse UV mapping
for the texture. Attached are an image I used the butterfly in and
an image showing the triangular mesh (828 triangles because I wanted
a reasonably defined border and also small triangles for the body
because of the curvature there).
At least two things are still wrong. The image looks overexposed and
in the triangular mesh one of the edges seems missing.
Comments or remarks?

I now have and even better I have the programs to generate any variety
as long as I have a picture.

Yes, why not. What more do you need?

actually less than 2, unless you are in the southern hemisphere
