Gang,
Here's my fish tank so far... I really need some more live rock,
coral, inverts and fish. The starfish was done in SPatch, but I'm having a
hell of a time getting a good looking fish or two. The live rock is a
blob, and I don't like it, but damn are these things hard to do without a
good windows-based editor.

No I find it all much easier using emacs on a Linux box:-)

very, very nice!
Cool scene, very pleasant colours.
Maybe a little bit stormy water for a standing aquarium? Or was it taken
during an earthquake? ;-)

Cool picture. I like the lighting, both of the aquarium and of the room.
They add a lot to the calm atmosphere a real aquarium should have.
Dow did you do the sand at the bottom? I'm currently doing an aquarium
myself, and I couldn't get even close to that look. It's very good.

you should be able to find lots of good 'profile' shots of fish only, these
will give you a good guide to the shape, and server as your texture as well.
also seeing as the fish are going to be quite small you can skip all that UV
mapping malarkey (afterall if no one is going to see it, don't make it)

Not necessarily. My aquarium has a Hagen Fluval filter/pump that looks
a lot like the one in this tank and it does cause some moderate to heavy
seas.

I see. I didn't expect that due to the pump. I thought they produce a rather
smooth flow.
Well... I never had an aquarium since it always is/was in conflict with the
interests of my cat.... *g*
BTW: modelling a fish seems to be interesting. Maybe I will start with a
fish as soon as my fern scene is finished (if ever)

Nice, but i think you should really try photons on that. The shadows seem
to indicate that there are not 3 light sources like you would expect from
3 lamps.

Thanks for all of the comments, I'm glad people like how this is turning
out! To answer some of the question:
The sand was done as a difference between the tank shape and a heightfield,
with a granite texture really squashed in the Y direction. The water was
also done with a heightfield.
I did have caustics on an earlier version; do caustics work as well when
radiosity is used or does that matter at all? I'll put the caustics back
in and render again tonight.
Any hints/help with fish models (SPatch preferred) would be appreciated!
Also, any ideas for making more rock without resorting to modelling more
blobs, and ideas for corals and other inverts would be great too!
I'll post a scene in the text.scenefiles area with just the tank so the
curious can see what I'm doing and offer improvements! <smile>
