Just something I whipped up, took around 9mins to render.

To me, the interesting thing about this image is what appears to be
the 'total internal reflection' of the spotlight photons.

Beautiful. Has a soft look to it that I find very appealing.

All the best,

not-complicated but very artistic and nice image :)

Thanks :)

Unfortuately, I lack both the time and patience :( to set up anything more
complex.

Beautiful! Simple setup and yet so stunning image. I am very
impatient when it comes to rendering time. Heck, 9 minutes is
_good_ !

I still can't make out what shape the glass really is. At the
top especially, where I see some faint elliptical outline around
the more prominent (nipple?) shape.

Yes - what lihting setup did you use? Only a white spotlight, or
multi-coloured lights? It's really interesting that the shadows beneath
the stand are cyan, magenta and yellow. I would have expected red, green
and blue, if anything.

Oh, beautiful picture, btw!

I used 3 spotlights, 1 red, 1 green and 1 blue.

As for the coloured shadows, take the blue spotlight for instance, its
'shadow' will only be lit by the red and green spotlights, therefore
showing up yellow.

Nice, simple, and elegant. I wouldn't mind having one of these sitting
on my desk just to look at when I'm tired of working on something. Good
choices for the RGB spotlights...not too brightly colored, but gives a
hint of color to the scene.
I'd try reducing the diameter of the wire on the vertical supports and
top ring, it looks too heavy compared to the "orb". And maybe position
the top ring lower on the orb. Maybe use a hexagon pattern instead of
checker for the floor, keeping a 3-way symmetry. Render it at a higher
resolution and it'd make a nice desktop picture.
