Hi @ all

Well.. first post here. Originally, I wanted to first-post some
kind of "reflective sphere over checkered plane" thing, but now,
as I was inspired by some of the "marbles in a bowl"-images, I
think I will post my version of that...

I know that I have a long way to go to reach the skill of some of
you guys, but I still have some years of my life to try ;)

There are some areas looking like moiree-effects, and some
artifacts which look like wrong pixels on an LCD screen.
Especially for the second ones I have no idea how to fix. The
artifacts can be seen on the second image.

Originally rendered at 1600x1200, this is scaled to 800x600.

Could be, perhaps, the antialias? Have you tried with method 2?

Looks great! I think the artifacts (if I have actually found them at all)
could be due to max_trace_level. Since the glass continues to reflect upon
itself, it would need a high MTL or it will hit the "roof" and turn black.
The window with the statistics after a rendering will say if the MTL was
reached.

And welcome. Your first post CAN, in fact, be said to fit the tradition.
It's 3 marble spheres on a checked floor - that is so big, you can't see the
other ..checks.. hmm.

Hugo

I don't remember seeing this. MTL was 10, and 3 for the photons.
Now I am rendering the image at 20, resp. 5. Hope that helps...

It may or may not solve the problem, but it will help. Also the adc_bailout
comes in handy. If you adjust these values, you should be able to get rid of
black pixels and avoid slowing down rendering too much.

If the value in MTL is reached, the pixel will turn black, because the real
color of the pixel could not be found within the allowed attempts (in your
case 10 or 20). If the reflections on a surface goes on and on - as certain
spots in your bowl keeps reflecting back and forth - it may be a good idea
to allow the maximum number of attempts (which is 256).

The adc_bailout tries to prevent that rendering slows down a lot. It only
allows reflections to continue when they matter. By default this value is
1/255 but you could try something like 1/64. It may add a tad of noise, but
nothing bad.

Hugo

This would make a nice desktop image. Interesting without being
distracting.

These could be fixed by higher-quality antialiasing settings.

Hmm...you're using a lathe object for the cup? Try using "sturm".

ruby -e "n=gets.to_i;a=(2..n).to_a;a.each{|x|puts
x;(x*2).step(n,x){|j|a.delete j}}"

Primes?

Thank you!

I'm rendering now with +A0.03 +AM2.. looks better, but they are
still visible :(

Yes, it is... I will try it if the current render does the same
artifacts.
