First I want to say thanks to the people who pointed me to the new
features in 3.8, most notably the new gamma handling system and the
"fade_distance 0" feature for light sources. Together they helped to get
rid of this weird look that my scenes were suffering from for such a
long time. Seems I'll be busy for a while to upgrade all the major
scenes and render them again.
Today I worked on this one, a repair platform for modular space ships.

I think it looks much better than the former variant, which was
essentially the same model but rendered with display_gamma 2.2 and the
old fade_power/fade_distance settings for light sources.
