Hi(gh)!
A first milestone (of hundreds more to come, I think) in POVEarth is
reached: the first multi-tile scene! It is made up of the tiles n80e016
and n80e017 (after manual cleaning - the coastlines are not as accurate
as they ought to be, so I still put hope in the GeoTIFFs from Norwegian
Polar Institute).
As in this case the boundary between the two tiles runs entirely through
ocean (and I, also for the first time, used a water texture coded by the
late Friedrich A. Lohmüller for the ocean sphere), I did not yet probe
whether there is a visible seam between tiles or not.
The first image is once more an overhead view of the whole area, this
time from 100 kms above. As the Blue Marble mosaics do not contain land
areas north of 80°N (at least not accurately represented, but only as a
crude all-white approximation), I once again used a simple light grey
"rock" texture instead. When I advance further east into the glaciated
parts of Nordaustlandet, I will instead use rock/ice distribution
textures gleaned from the topographic maps at the Norwegian Polar Institute.
The second image shows a view from a hill on Verlegenhukflya across the
sea towards Storsteinhalvøya - I had to climb to 400 metres above ground
and even then use an upright view port to have both land masses visible
in the picture.
The third one is the same vice-versa from Storsteinhalvøya, 100 metres
above ground and in the usual POV-Ray side ratio.
Next step probably will be the implementation of a real atmosphere to
get rid of the artifical horizon line of the sky_sphere - I will use the
same atmosphere tool originally programmed by Bruno Cabasson I already
used with my "Ghurghusht" scenes back in 2010.
See you in Khyberspace!
