Wow there are some really good images in here, so I am kind of embarrassed
to post this one.
It is my first image so please be gentle with me :)
I have used some CSG and random textures. At the moment they are all
supplied textures. I haven't had the nerve to create my own :D

Don't be embarassed, everybody here has early images hidden on their hard
drive :)
It is a better one that my firsts images.
Some advices though.
Convert your image in jpg or png so that it can display in most newsreaders.
Don't forget switching anti-aliasing on to avoid this stairs effect on
tilted edges.
I like the tilting of the camera but I'd prefer more sky and less ground. It
looks like we shall crash soon :-)

Welcome Elija, this is intriguing. Quite attractive and an interesting variation
of a Reflective Sphere on a Chequered Plane. That is what all first posts should
be (in joke). Tilting the camera is a good idea.
One thing, you image is named "first.tga" but it is a png. That caused me a
couple of seconds confusion.

Welcome!
I like the camera angle + very good composition. The foggy horizon's very
effective too.
I suggest you use anti-aliasing, mess with the lighting a bit (e.g. lower
ambient light to get higher-contrast dramatic lighting), and replace the
textures with your own ones (I never use pov's standard texture include
files, they look wierd!).

First of all, thanks to everyone for their kind words.
Anti-aliasing really makes a difference doesn't it! and I have changed the
camera angle a bit to avoid the crash :D
I have a couple of questions though if you don't mind.
How do I go about lowering the ambient light?
Is there a good tutorial on making my own textures?

You can do this per-object like this:
sphere{0,1
pigment{rgb 1}
finish{ambient 0} <---
}

Just look at all the example files distributed with POV-Ray. Many of
them use use texture libraries, so try to avoid those if you want to
make your own textures. When making a texture, just follow this
structure, and you'll be fine:
sphere{0,1
texture{
pigment{ pigment items }
normal{ normal items }
finish{ finish items }
}
}

Thanks everyone.
Here is the final rendering. I'm off to play with some custom textures.

Not bad. The only fault is that it's not RSOCP :p.
