Any idea who is the author of the set of files (hot.pov cold.pov
mask.pov untitled.pov) generating this image? Date seems to be 6-7-2002.

I thought the underlying space-filing grid was Tor Olav's, from the HOF

subcube says that final render is from 2003.
Can't seem to find any references or links to the .pov files anywhere.

It is puzzling. I always note the original author's name but somehow
either I forgot or the name was not clearly provided, which last makes
me think that the code does not come from a POV-Ray environment.
Tor Olav comes close where the shape is concerned but I am almost sure
it is not him as he signs his code. Alex is an interesting possibility
indeed but...
Algis Budrys is of course spot on. However, did you miss my question,
Stephen? :-)

I don't remember it at all. So I was practising being a smarty pants.

You succeeded, didn't you? ;-)
Which reminds me that I need to re-read Algis Budrys, so thanks for the
reminder!

It was you that reminded me with the subject.

Well, this is a long-shot, but perhaps try mathematician Francois deComite.
I've corresponded with him before about his papers on the Dupin cyclide, and he
was very friendly and responsive.
He use[d][s] POV-Ray, as a mathematician he'd be adept at making a TOK / Escher
space-filling scene, and so far his are the only images that popped up in Google
image search.

If it's not him, then they're yours. (they do sort of resemble that foliage
texture patterning you just posted)
Or you got them via illicit channels off the deep, dark web.
