This one not any more...

Laziness... Maybe she has a double, or we see what there is not ;-)

Oh. That's a bad case of corrosion indeed and a pity for such a special
object.

It is just an illusion because the tiles do not extend under the plate.
The tile surface is bevelled against them. As for the alignment, two
things come to mind: (1) laziness (mine); (2) the 'builders' did not
care. ;-)

In RL (2) is present everywhere around us. In fact, one can hardly adapt
the size of a building to the size of the tiles ;-) [only we can do that
in csg of course]. So, my philosophy is that I do not care and like to
leave those imperfections which are more life-like as it where than a
perfect geometric pattern.

I had a look at them and they do look familiar. I am reminded somewhat
of the illustrations from Thomas Lovell Beddoes' Death's Jest Book.

That is a classic.

Now, this is interesting! In the summer of 1969, as a small group of
students and one staff member from the university, we made a walking
tour through Corsica, particularly the mountainous interior, for fun
/and/ for the geology. As we did not arrive all at the same time, we had
a graffiti sign to indicate where we were and/or where we were going.
That sign was exactly like your drawing except that the wall was the sea
surface.

I am sure it was not original by itself, but I do not remember where it
came from...

I note down this author who I did not know.

For those interested, the original cloister model is still here:
