Three versions of a test thingumajig with plenty of gradients, in an
assumed_gamma 1.0 scene.
Make sure to view this image on a properly calibrated display.
Left: Linear interpolation, corresponding to current behaviour with
assumed_gamma 1.0. Note how the black-to-white transition appears to
have a strong white bias; the black-to-green transition also looks quite
troublesome.
Center: Interpolation of gamma-encoded values, corresponding to current
behaviour with assumed_gamma 2.2 (or #version 3.6 scenes without
assumed_gamma). (Except that in this case the gamma is 2.5.) Note how
the black-to-something transitions appear much more balanced, but at the
cost of a notable darkening between colours.
Right: Linear interpolation of chromaticity, with gamma-encoded
interpolation of brightness. Best of both worlds if I'm asked.
All three modes will soon become available in POV-Ray proper.
