Actually, I got the basic idea from the background on a website which my granddaughter
uses quite a bit.
But now that you've mentioned it, I do vaguely remember images a bit like this on. But
that was way back.

Concerning Tim Nikias, you probably thought of this, from May 20, 2002: 
a kind of superellipsoid Menger sponge fractal!

No, in my mind it is a white block scape with one single red one...
