I've been a couple days chasing a "Maxfield Parrish" type cloudy sky.
Thought I'd post this failure as I liked it for what it was and thought
others might too.

Yes, that is certainly a better example indeed.
I was reminded somehow of the one called "the pillars of creation" and I
thought seeing something similar happening inside William's cloud too.

Hi Thomas,
I'm not sure which Hubble image you have in mind, however yes, I think
this would make a good start on such an image.
In fact this rings a bell - reminds me. Indeed, there was a post to
povray.general early this year by "cubicApocalypse" which was a great
start on just such an image.
All the working code was posted there along with link to a working
image. Looking at that code anew, we both are using multiple medias in
the interior block as part of the approach though different approaches
otherwise.

Flailed and failed at the Parrish clouds again today, but along the way
found my way to another media image I like.

Fantastically fiery Bill, I really like this!
For years I too have been obsessed with cloud media and various pattern
permutations... it's a digital addiction.

Another nice one indeed.
Partly, I suppose, the Parrish effect is in the illumination of the
clouds from outside, like sunset or sunrise? That is different from what
you try to achieve.

Thanks.
As for the cloud chase, it's all your fault Robert. I resumed this
probable folly after reading how you did the clouds in your Racetrack
image at : http://www.tc-rtc.co.uk/previouscompetition/stills.html !
Aside: Great image & thank you for the detailed how-accomplished
description.
I remember you working clouds and read again your newsgroup posts as
well as posts from others. The chase has been fun & I've learned, but
ARRGGH!

Thanks.
Yes exactly, like clouds side lit by the sun at sunrise and sunset. My
understanding is Parrish would lay down layers of color and clear
lacquer as the base for his paintings. I think he got close to capturing
the actual color pop and depth I've seen in the sky with a low sun &
clouds - especially in northern climes in the fall months.
The approach I've been trying is to use actual layers in the media. To
do something like what he did with paint and lacquer with povray media.
The media layering more or less works out, but getting the "clouds" &
clarity is another matter.
This attached image is as close as I have gotten. It is perhaps not to
bad for color, but I think it too fuzzy, too blurry.
