For history's sake.

Jonathan Rafael Ghiglia (aka JRG) wrote a scatter macro for POV-Ray back 
in 2001.

His examples used a flat plane, so I tested it with an isosurface (from 
his clutter macro) and this is the result. Maybe not perfect were the 
contact between the coins and the curved surface is concerned.
