With a little help I managed to get Jamie's branch of Koppi physics
playground running. The build (getting the prerequisites on my system)
process wasn't bad but had it's moments ... If anyone running opensuse
want's to give it a go I might be persuaded to share my notes as like I
said there were a few hoops to jump through.

This image is from an unaltered demo ... I just found the povray output
file(s) in the anim directory and used the last file in the sequence. I
ran the 3ds file of the chain link through Poseray, then edited the pov
output file to use the single instance of the link repeated rather than
individual meshes ... union-ed the whole thing together so I could
transform easily.

I've noticed a few placement issues, but imagine it's just minor tweaks.

Please do so!

Hmmm... strange: did you apply additional transformations on the
POV-Ray side, after the matrix? Perhaps that lead to unexpected results...

I played around some more after posting and I think this image may be
due to the value I had for d.restitution in the lua script file ... the
only thing I haven't figured out is why some of the links extend below
the ground plane slightly.

standby ... I printed out Koppi's install recipe and made a bunch of
notes in the margins, so at this point it's fairly messy.

This could have caused the links to become unstable, so the chain
broke is several parts. This can be mitigated greatly by increasing the
triangle count (i.e. smooth it one more time).

:) ...just figured it out: Poseray is rotating it 90 on x... simply
uncheck the Import options -> reorient 3Ds on the first tab (I've had
this unchecked since immemorial ages, that's why I didn't have this
"problem").

For now it's here:
http://wiki.povray.org/content/User:Jholsenback/Bullet_Physics_Playground

I might move to my blog if the team gives me grief about having it there ;-)

I made my self a paperclip in blender then exported as 3ds ... cloned
the chain-link example and came up with this arrangement of paper clips.

Ah... you beat me: I had also this "paperclips chain" one to-do list.

Very nice, but seems the chain broke in several points: thin and long
objects are problematic in this regard...

actually I just grouped them together (not touching) and just let 'em
drop onto the ground plane
