Over 4 days of rendering time (for 1920x1200 resolution); some parts
turned out just the way I wanted them, others didn't. *Sigh*.

generally speaking I like it, but there's something about the
sand/ground plane that I can't put my finger on ... the grains are cool!

The balls are excellent. I am less sure about the sand. The basic
texture should be (much) more grainy, and the little spheres - while a
good addition - should be more irregular imo. They look too perfectly
spherical and maybe a tiny bit too large.

Very lovely!

Scale !! The sand is too small for the view point. at this zoom factor,
compact dirt is unexpected.
And maybe... fingerprints/grease on the steel balls.

See the "clouds" around the sun reflection at the top left? They're not
clouds.

Normaly, you don't play petanque on sand, the balls would tend to dig
and burry themselve in it. Soft dirt or mudy ground are also no-no. Been
solid steel, the balls are quite heavy for their size.
The optimum play surface is not to flat hard packed dirt. Fine to medium
gravel can also offer some interesting chalenge, as well as grass.
The surface realy don't need to be level. In fact, the play is more
interesting when there are some bumps, ruts, cracks, sparse rough gravel
and other dificulties laying around, like some roots jutting up.

nice. the spherical grains didn't quite work for me either,
possibly also because they appear detached from the ground,
as if someone just tried to salt the ball. Maybe burying
them into the ground randomly helps?
Also the contrast between the perfect sphere and the grimey
grooves is very strong. Maybe add some slight scratches and
dustiness to the base texture?

Yes, the scratches are missing. I forgot to mention that one :-)
