A "quick" gem/photon test scene that got a bit out of hand.
The diamond geometry is from "Whong" on TurboSquid. Also used
are POV-Tree and a HDRI probe from unparent.com. And yes I
know emeralds aren't usually cut like that ;)

Looks nice. But the focal blur is definitely too strong, making the 
scene look like a miniature. (Unless of course that effect is intended.)

As a rule-of-thumb, the aperture parameter (which actually specifies the 
diameter of the "virtual pupil") should be in the order of magniture of 
(camera height above ground)*0.003, presuming the camera to be at eye level.

I thought the sole purpose of focal blur is to cover up
everything that's wrong or lacking detail in the scene ;)
Furthermore I thought it helped here to give a slight
mystical touch, so realism went out of the window.

Thanks! The grass is actually just a plane slightly
higher than the ground with the following pigment:

#declare P_GRASS = pigment
{
   granite scale 0.05 color_map
   {
     [0.5 color rgb <0,0.7,0>]
     [0.5 color rgbt 1]
   }
}

The transparency gives a bit of structure as shadows
get cast on the ground below. The latter is actually the
ground pigment of the HDRI probe (although not emissive).
But it's rather drab and low res so a ground plane with
light grayish-brownish bozo should give similar results.

The look also depends on the anti-aliasing, using focal
blur probably gives the grass some extra graininess.

Rune's grasstex macro is based on that principle too.
