Ah, at last I found some time again to /toy around/ with POV-Ray rather
than hack its code!
This one was inspired by an overdose of stackernight.pov regression test
renders - plus a bit of Google and Wikipedia searching. The moon sneaked
its way into the picture as a harmless decoration at first, but then
started inflating its role before I could stop it.
About half a day of SDL coding, and roughly half an hour of rendering.

I like it too because it's so peaceful. Judging by the reflections on the water
it looks like the lanterns are hollow inside, so my guess is something other
than sslt. I'm also curious about the lighting method. It's very pleasant.

Excellent indeed!
Isn't there a Japanese festival with lanterns put floatong on the water?

Harmonious and peaceful scene, I like it
;-)

Backside diffuse. A box clipped_by another box to open top & bottom and
leave only the surface.

Some light from the direction of the moon (area_light with all the
standard bells & whistles, i.e. circular orient adaptive jitter), but
the main light sources are the candles (again area_lights); the
illumination of the water below the lanterns is achieved with a greenish
diffuse plane right below the transparent surface. Radiosity is used,
but maybe doesn't even play much of a role.

From my researches, there are several such festivals in different parts
of the world, though many seem to be using open vessels, or just set the
candles afloat in the water. The most popular festival using lanterns
seems to be something in Hawaii (IIRC) - and indeed another annual event
in Japan, but I'd hesitate to call it a "festival": They're
commemorating the nuclear bomb attacks, if I gathered it right.

Not bad. In fact, quite a good idea!
My only thought is (without having it seen in reality so just guessing) that
the water surface close around each lamp should be illuminated by the lamp
light, even if only a little bit and in the color of the light's color.
