Trying to make this work. I want to achieve the feeling of loneliness, but
the minimalist approach here doesn't work. I think I have to dirty it up a
bit more.

Comments and help will be much appreciated.

Try with a much stronger contrast to see if it helps.

The first one was rendered in 3.7 Beta with media and radiosity. here's the
same file with 3.6

I like the idea, and good job on the flower and the texture on the wall. If you
want to get the idea of loneliness, I think the environment might need to
change. I'm not sure why, but the picture does not make me feel lonely. I
think if you had buildings further in the background and added a focal blur,
such that only the flower were in focus, it would communicate loneliness
better.

I think you had different gamma settings. (3.7 uses different default
gamma for some reason.)

I'm getting a strange effect with these images apparently due to the
gamma settings. In Thunderbird the first image looks very pale and
washed out and the second one is much darker -- contrast is still rather
low, but definitely _much_ darker. However, when I save them and look
at them with a separate graphics viewer (GQview or the GIMP in Linux)
they both look the same.

Very puzzling... :-/

Switching between the two versions, I can see:
The noise generatior is different. The brick wall is more interesting in yhe 3.7
version.
The lighting under the overhanging parts is different.

You know you've been raytracing too long when you look at real clouds and
criticise their media and radiosity settings.

Yes, I see those differences too, but I was just commenting on the
difference in the brightness/contrast that I was seeing in Thunderbird
vs separate graphics viewers. But you're right, I should have been more
specific.
