This was another impressive image for us back then, though in hindsight,
it looks pretty straightforward.

I remember this one as a POV-Ray image. Interesting that it started in
DKBTrace and was later converted.

Impressive, yes .... I don't think I'm exaggerating much when I say that your
ray-tracer and this image are responsible for ~75% of how my life has so far
turned out (don't worry, I'm doing fine by my own standards :))

DKBTrace taught me 3D, compiling, and also provided a way to get
involved in mathematics even without my noticing. I think I was 15yrs or so.
And this image was just *wow*.

His planet.dat is still one of my favorite planetary renderings, and
when that Enterprise model came out for POV .... no words.

Incidentally, these guys used to run a private UUCP-network (FIPnet) that
they later connected to the Internet (polling with modem; this was 1992
or so). Me & and friends up here in northern Finland were doing the
same (NullNet), and we ended up joining the forces to get access to
USENet (not sure if comp.graphics.raytracing existed, or if i had to participate
in the vote for getting it up :)). A year or two later, the WWW and the
mass-adaptation of Internet changed that a lot ...

Hello David, hello to povray users,

Just to say that I also started ray tracing with DKB. It was... a long time ago,
on a 80286 PC. Most of the pictures I had in those days were smaller than 32x20
pixels, to 'speed up' the rendering process. The final render was BIG: 160x100
(and VERY long). I also remember it took a long time to reduce the color depth
from 24 bits to 8 bits. I have used many softwares for this color reduction
step, and later I have discovered piclab (from the stone soup group, known for
their fractint software, if my memory serves me well).

David, I am glad to write this small message. DKB started it all: I have been
ray-tracing since the days of DKB.

I am older now, I seldom use povray, but I still look at the extraordinary
pictures on this newsgroup. And, from time to time, I go back to the keyboard
and write a few lines of code (after the pencil and paper step, as I used to do
when number crunching power was expensive).

Have a nice day,

leTigreBleu

Another image I remember with fondness.
