Another point in the FLOSS Weekly interview was that I don't consider
myself an artist. The pictures I designed where usually to test
particular features. Any attempts at an artistic image were somewhat lame.
Here are two more pictures I designed from DKBTrace. The first one was
specifically to test a new feature where shadows through a partly
transparent object show up correctly on the floor. Prior to this
feature, a transparent object still had a solid shadow.
The next picture is one that I think I designed (I don't entirely
remember). It does show the kind of image I tended to come up with on
my own.

Truly vintage, with their 8.3 MS-DOS filenames... from which year are they?
By the way, are you *THAT* David K. Buck?!? If so, then let's all bow
our heads in awe!
See you on www.khyberspace.de !

Nice. They have that vintage flavour of early POV-Ray. We tend to forget
that in those days, these were amazing images produced on a home computer.
In a way, they still reflect (literally :-) ) that sense of wonder...

That picture was from 1990.
I am indeed *THAT* David K. Buck but no head bowing is necessary,
please. POVRay is what it is today because of the efforts of teams of
developers and thousands of users. I kicked things off with my
interests and it spread from there.

Probably rendered on an Amiga, isn't it? Do you still have any data
about the rendering time?

Surely true... but every great idea starts with an ingenious single
person! I would not have the programming skills to start such a
project... on the other hand, probably in programming, there is no such
star cult like it's for example in music! If I ever met Vangelis or
Larry "Synergy" Fast in persona, I truly would be awed and somewhat
uneasy to start conversation...
See you on www.khyberspace.de!

So procedural patterns were a part of the earliest implementation?

DKBTrace did use procedural patterns based on a paper in the SIGGRAPH 85
conference proceedings by Ken Perlin called "An Image Synthesizer".
This was in DKBTrace 1.0 when I first released is as I recall.
We later replaced the noise function with one from Robert Skinner
because it gave better results than Perlin's.

I remember that image! I changed a lot of the textures around and fiddled
with it, eventually making a desktop image.
You can never *see* my desktop, however, as it's usually covered up with
windows :)
