Here are a few tiled backgrounds I've generated in POV-Ray, I think
I may have posted one or two before (hopefully the number of attachments
won't cause a problem!)

What's the trick to making them tiled?

It's not feature creep if you put it
at the end and adjust the release date.

Awesome... though some of them are slightly disgusting ;-)!

I would like to ask you whether I may use two of them (bg11a.jpg and
circuit01.jpg) for the "Mud" and "Computing" sections of my personal web
pages at http://www.khyberspace.de ... the pictures would have to be
slightly modified, i. e. cut to 120 pixels width, and bg11a.jpg would be
toned to a dark olive brown to give the impression of blackish swamp
mud. Of course I would include credits on the respective pages!

See you in Khyberspace!

Neat tiles! #2 and #3 would be great for zombies. BRAINS! BRAINS!

Nifty stuff! I, too, would be interested knowing more about your technique for
producing repeating tiles. I *think* I've figured out one way to do it... use
nested #while loops to reproduce 9 copies of the objects on a 3x3 grid and zoom
in on the center square from a very long distance away (use orthographic
projection ?)... but this seems a rather Rube Golberg approach. I suspect that
you have come up with a far more elegant method.

Best Regards,
Mike C.

I think disgusting is in the eye of the beholder :-)

Not a problem if it's a personal, non-commercial site ...

You've answered Darren's question above,

I used orthographic projection, and I have a macro which takes an object
and places 9 copies on a grid ... I did try and think of a clever
solution which looked at bounding boxes and tried to calculate which
objects need to be duplicated, but then what about reflections of other
objects .... in the end I decided the quick-and-dirty solution would
be quicker ....

You also have to be careful with reflections - if there is a reflected
sky then it needs to repeat on the same grid size and if you use surface
normals then they also need to repeat (things like bozo, crackle and
granite don't).

I usually don't use finitely distant skies.

Inspired by Bernard's work with 3x3 grids and orthographic projection, I've
experimented with 5x5 & 9x9 peition patterns to work with stuctures that appear
over larger numbers of tiles. (I guessing that folks who have posted multiple
attachments to a single post have done so using an actual newsreader program...
The website, which I'm using now, only seems to be willing to let me post one at
a time - thus the multiple posts. Sorry for the clutter)

Best Regrads,
Mike C.

Here's the tile based on a 5x5:
