At first I liked this, but now I don't.
I'm not sure why, maybe it's too red,
or too simple to code, or just too much
like other "modern" paintings.

It reminds me of the work of a French painter in the 1960's. I forgot his

You dont like it??? I'm amazed with this picture, the strange texture and 3D
effect the painting has... how do you get it? is it a heighfield?

You could make a nice Jackson Pollock with these routines, just add mooore 
paint, swirl, pieces of glass from broken liquor bottles, rests of 
cigarettes etc... ;-)

Yeah, it's a heightfield with a gradient y color map.

He was quite famous in the 60-70s because he got a lot of public commissions 
(stamps, coins, logotypes etc.), so his work is somehow familiar in France 
even though people have forgotten his name.

Yes yes, isn't there a documentary of him dressing up in a conquistador 
costume to paint an abstract rendition of a period battle?  I have this 
dim memory of something like that.
