On the off chance that anyone cares what I'm doing, here's a pic. There
must be something with me and extraterrestrial desert scenes. :-)

Took about an hour and a half at 1GHz (if I didn't still need MegaPOV
for another project, I'd upgrade to 3.7 so I could use both cores) and I
haven't even turned on radiosity. Everything is an isosurface (okay,
except the sky, but you knew that).

I like how my alien termite mounds look right now, so maybe I'll futz
with the terrain again. It's way too flat, and just a little too regular.

Oh, yeah, and I want to add swarming creatures coming out of the hive. :-)

Alternatively, I could skip the TC-RTC, and turn this into an ad for the
prevention of sexually transmitted diseases... 8-O

You know you've been raytracing too long when you have ever snuck out of
your bedroom to moniter the progress of an overnight render.

A couple comments: I think you need a closer viewpoint, just too much
empty space as it is. Perhaps a very close and low viewpoint making
them tower into the sky. Also I'm a bit bothered by the way the mounds
simply sit on the ground -- there should be at least some transition,
like the mud going a little way up their bases.

The horizon in the exact center of the image is generally, aesthetically
considered a no-no, too static. Either lower the horizon to emphasize
the sky or raise it to emphasize the ground. I think a low, close
viewpoint (low horizon) whould give you a much stronger image. But
that's just one person's personal opinion -- take it for what it is. ;-)

Thanks for the feedback. :-)

Right now, I'm playing with getting textures and shapes to work; the
composition will probably change a bit as the work progresses.

I put the camera at such a distance because I was trying to create a
feel of something that's too dangerous to get close too. That may or may
not be such a good idea.

I'm wavering on whether or not I should have the mounds blend into the
land more or not; part of me likes how much more "alien" they look this
way. It's also less work. ;-)

I will agree with you on the horizon line. I will fiddle with that as
the scene evolves; I plan on changing the terrain a bit here, so the
horizon will definitely change.

You know you've been raytracing too long when you spend hours setting up
a slide show of all your pov generated images, then invite friends,
neighbors and relatives over and no one will watch it with you.
