Sure, this is just 6 copies of a heightfield in a spiral.
The fractal is a mandelbrot snowflake edited a bit.

plane {z,-1
   pigment{
      mandel 128
      exponent 7
      scale 0.8
   }
}

This is something like flame-mike is trying to do...
