Here's a wip I've been doing in my spare time. Any suggestions would be
nice.

The Sun is dazzling white, not yellow. At best, put a touch of yellow
(e.g., rgb <1, 1, 0.9>) to complement the blue of the sky. (Yellow does
dominate the Sun's output, but our eyes are evolved to compensate.)

Even at sunset, when the Sun turns progressively creme-colored, then orange,
then red, the color is never saturated (i.e., blue value is always > 0).
Most importantly for lighting in general, nothing in the scene can be
brighter that the light source. If the Sun is pure yellow (rgb <1, 1, 0>),
then nothing apart from the sky would appear to have any blue in it. (The
sky is exempt, because the sky is what takes the blue out of the Sun in the
first place.)

Realism can be best maintained by having the Sun object (looks_like) the
same color as the light_source, but using a high ambient finish.

Not a problem at all. I actually was going to replace that yellow ball with
a media filled cone. That would be my sun instead... and I would place a
haze from the atmosphere as well. Right now, I'm running into problems
with the code. It wont render properly. I think the macro for the sun
doesn't like how I coded the image. It makes it point the wrong place
instead of at the camera. It could have to do with translations, but there
is too much code for me to really fix it.

I'm at the point. Figure it out, or scrap it.

The attached file is my gift to whomever would like it. Please give me some
credit if you decide to use it. I wouldn't mind having a link to the
finished image so I can see how people have worked with my start.

Thanks,
Allen

The shadows through the bridge openings look a bit too sharp (too computer-y
looking, I guess.) Try replacing the sun light with an area_light; that
should fuzz out the shadows a bit.

I wouldn't mind seeing a larger version of this; the water looks quite nice.

Actually, I wouldn't expect such a strong shadow at all, as the
light you get from the surface is mostly reflected, not diffuse.
If the water were clear and shallow, you would also get some
light from the ground and see the (doubly?) refracted shadow.

Actually, I have to second that. I would love to see a larger resolution
version. :-)

You know you've been raytracing too long when you've made more than two
posts to the 4:3 vs 16:9 thread for the Movie Project.
