I think it's finished!
I've added a background and tweaked my tone mapping & blur. Total render
time 16h 52m, at 1600x1200.
Full size 1600x1200 version here:

I love it. The big size really brings out the details. Very realistic.

Hi Tek!
Aside from the fact that's it absolutely stunning, I'd go for some
nitpicking if you ask that directly :)
- The plants in the background look like grass, but if they're supposed
to be grass they're too big and too much ground is visible. So I'd
either go for the grassy look (smaller scale and more of it) or add some
blossoms or similar stuff to make it look more like flowers.
- As someone already pointed out the board is pretty well aligned with
the table, a small rotation would look better IMHO.
Just my 2 cents, and as I said: Stunning image! Congratulations :)
Regards,
Florian

They're spider plants.

It is already slightly rotated! By 1 degree to be precise. I think it's
enough to make it look like it's not perfectly straight, and I don't want to
turn it more since I think people would try to place their chessboard
roughly aligned to the table.

Absolutely stunning!! Very lovely picture and it has certainly improved in
its photorealsim since your earlier picture. I like everything however
someone else mentioned the plants and I think I would agree that they do
appear as slightly the wrong size in some way.
Congrats on such a wonderful picture!

I think the plants look fine. they look line larger garden plants that
haven't flowered yet.

Damn.

I think you gave up on the render and replaced it with a photo. :-)

You know you've been raytracing too long when you look at those
triangular road signs which have a square background...and wonder why
they didn't just alpha-channel them!

The plants and the leafless trees place the scene somewhere during spring. This
reinforced by the, still, mostly baren ground. Very nice.

I think its great! A very fancy RSOCP. I like that table texture also, so
I'm grabbing it from the old post. Thanks for supplying it.
