I made a random-planet generator that can create earth-like planets. Still
struggling with the clouds (they're very hard to do convincingly :-/) but I
think it doesn't look too bad the way it is now.
Comments welcome!

Wow that looks awesome!
I may be able help with the clouds, I had a go at doing a similar thing a
while ago and got a good cloud effect but could never get the land right!
I've attached a picture of my attempt, and the source for it.

That's pretty cool. I'd like to see what the function is for generating the
continents. I tried this once and couldn't come up with anything realistic
or even stylized and unrealistic but visually appealing.
nice work

hmm, seems like a good start, I might just be able to use your code! :)
thanks !

this is the pattern that determines the height of the landscape:
pigment_pattern {
pigment_pattern {
crackle scale .75
poly_wave .125
warp {turbulence .125 lambda 3}
}
pigment_map {
[0 rgb 0]
[1 granite scale 10
scale .5 warp {turbulence .75 lambda 3} scale .5
]
}
}

That's a very cool idea, I hope you get the clouds sorted out soon. :)

maybe if I add one more small turbulence, but now it all looks too fuzzy for
close ups :)

Fantastic! Now see how close you can get to the real continents this way ;oD
