Steve! This image is awesome! How did you model the snake's head? And 
the texture? This is great. My only critique is the reflection near the 
bottom of the ring... it loses some of it's metallic look... most likely 
due to the lack of detail in the reflection... but that's minor. Great 
image... congrats!

Ever read any Wheel of Time books? They feature a ring design that's
described as a great serpent eating it's own tail. Meant to represent time
repeating itself over and over again.

Very cool design. What software did you use to do it? With such detail in
the head, I would like to see some more detail on the ring itself. Perhaps
something as simple as some minor bump mapping to give it "scales". If
you're going for sheer realism, some wear on the ring would add to it.
Nicks, scratches, dirt, grime.

Heh, thank you Sam, that's nice coming from someone that I admire as a 3d 
artist. The head (and body) was modelled in Wings, and the texture for the 
scaly bits around the mouth etc., are the faces that were left after one 
smooth operation. The selected faces were then extruded normally and then 
scaled uniformally, and then the whole model was smoothed once more leaving 
the scaly look. It doesn't look too good close up, but at this sort of 
distance, you can get away with it.

    Yes, I can understand this. I've seen this type of ring before and it's 
very Victorian* in design, although, it's really easy to see some Celtic 
Prince wearing this style of ring 2000+ years ago.

     That's good advice, thanks. I'm currently trying for some texture on 
the body, so if I get it anywhere near right, I'll post it soonish. Glad you 
liked it.

So I had to look up "Ourobus":

snake that continually eats itself, symbol of infinity

That is both a great design and a spectacular piece of modelling.  I 
love the scales detailing, not easy.

I'd say you've got the macro photo / hdri down to where it's routine for 
you.

I just spent several hours this afternoon, in the Metropolitan museum 
here, examining such artifacts, so I was particularily set up to 
appreciate this piece.
