I was looking at some Black Opals on the net and thought I'd have a go
at rendering one.
Crits welcome!

...with a shallower setting.

Something's not quite balanced in the scene?

equilibrium of the ring ..
I mean if you got a knife to create..
Do you present it on the side or sharp edge on a realistic scene?
You ring is good enough to be represented on its side on the table ..else
you should build a little box if you want to show it on its actual position
..
..
and a little critic on the gold rendering
its look a bit plastic ..(which is the default value of roughness in the pov
seeting)
so you should reduce the roughness to 0.01 (instead of 0.05 defeult) in the
finish statement of gold texture ..

Actually Steve is going to make a ring (in RL) for me and this is the first
stage. Just a few early designs to get a rough idea, they are more like
community.

Oh, I see... unnatural environment.

But I've got a box too... ;o)
A different design this time.

Yes, sure, it's basically this for the 'flakes' inside the stone:
texture{
pigment{color rgb <.2, .9, .2>} //change colour to suit
finish{
diffuse 0.08
ambient .45
specular 0.6
reflection {0.4 metallic}
conserve_energy}}
I'll try some rounds and ovals next with different shanks. :o)
