Remember that the original StarTreck ships where very smooth. They had absolutely NO
indentation nor 
bump along the hull.

The plastic model of NCC-1701 (TOS) that I owned had such indentations. 
  I've unfortunately made them a bit exaggerated compared to the 
original, but they were there.

The original had a flat, painted on, pattern. The plastic model made those flat
patterns into 
relief. I had a plastic model of a DC8, it's rivets where about a feet high if put to
scale! And the 
windows would have been recessed over 2 feet deep.
