I think I actually like them both...

Still not sure where the best place ofr the light source is for optimal 
reflections though. :-.

Neat. I think the scene perhaps needs to have more stuff in it so your 
brain can actually figure out what you're seeing. (It's not completely 
clear these are shadows and light on a flat surface.) Not sure *what* 
you could add to it though...

True. I was thinking the same, but I didn't want to modify your scene in
any other way than just making the actual object disappear. Neither had
(or have, if that counts) I any ideas for that :p.
