Something I've been fiddling with on and off for several months. Loosly
inspired by a scene from the computer game "Knights of the Old Republic"

I've been trying, without much success to get the lighting right, forground
visible and background hinted at but not shown clearly. I think this is the
closst I've got.

I'm going to add some more statues along the walls of the cave with torches
and detail the cave walls a little more. Slow work since this is a 10 hour
render.

It's *very* dark. Can't see much except the foreground. Three peeps standing
in very deep shadow.

Are those gray/white beams media beams? If so, they don't look much like it.
I would have expected this to render it something closer to 5 minutes. I
can't see where all the rendertime is going. Anything I'm missing perhaps?

All that aside, the lighting difference from foreground to background is
really extreme. Sorry to disappoint, but I get the impression there's a lit
foreground, then some dark and slightly translucent wall with some
white-streaks and three figures standing in shadow. Not much more.

Regards,
Tim

I couldn't even see that.
Gamma???
After major brightening I can decipher the image.
3 pharoah dudes on the far side of an arched bridge.
The bridge crosses a chasm illuminated by filtered light from high overhead.
There is some secondary oblique light source high above the viewers right
shoulder
The whole scene is almost monochromatic.
At first I took the media scattered downlighting to be some sort of veil or
curtain.
Perhaps you need to thicken up your chasm media (for more scattering) and
toss a whole lot more light at it.

I know. I want it to be dark, but this is a little too dark

They are scattering media with lightsource below. Also the cave walls (can't
see) are isosurfaces with pattern function.

Well that's about all there is. Besides, it's a WIP. You should have seen
the last one *g*

Trying to give hint of mystery. Deep cave, light beams coming from an abyss,
pathway leading into darkness bordered by statues on either side.

Is beams of light coming from the abyss (hence the angled out) They're
partially blocked by some bumpy surfaces below. Maybe reduce the number of
beams? Just one or 2 might give better impression.

There's great stuff lurking in the gloom - I'm looking forward to your next
iteration.
An idea - could the light from below be a diffuse red glow (as in lava) and
the shaft of sunlight from above be bright and white.
That would give you a neat a layer of symbolism on the Stygian metaphor.

They also appear curtain-like. If they were at some angle rather than nearly
vertical, it might give more of a feeling as to what they are.

maybe fake it the way they do in the movies or t.v., cool colored low-light
areas where it's dark, and warm colored light where it's brighter. They
manage to give the impression that it's dark without it being hard to see

Ah! Brilliant idea. Where did you pick that up? Do you work in TV?
