* Finally fixed the candle flame. I'm reasonably pleased with it. (I
know everybody else will tell me it's rubbish...)

* Took Gail's suggestion to make the marble stand rounded. I think it
looks better this way.

* Spend countless hours tearing my hair out attempting to make the ice
crystals look like... um... ice crystals. In the end, I took the fill
light and made it white instead of blue, and decreased the fade_distance
on the candle flame. This makes the crystals look less blue and more
white, which sort-of achieves the desired effect. (The crystals are also
smaller now, which helps... though not as much as I had hoped.)

At present, the ice crystals don't look enough like ice, and the overall
colour balance of the image is wrong. I doubt I can actually fix either
of these. (Suggestions welcome tho.)

This is rendered without radiosity. It bearly makes any difference now,
but does result in a very slightly redder image, which is probably
better. I'm rendering it now. Not sure which version I will submit.

Render time for this image was 2 hours + 48.3 seconds.

   It looks ok to me.

  Three suggestions, time permitting:

  1. Try to make the wick black at the top, and white(ish) at the bottom.

  2. Give your ice crystals a higher ambient.

  3. Make the flame bigger.

     Looking good though.

What's the finish on the ice crystals? Specifically specular and roughness,
or phong and phong_size

Orc,
Suggestions:
Bring the base of the flame down to the bottom of the black part of the wick
where it can actually melt the wax and generate a wax puddle to feed off.
The puddle doesn't need to be any more visible than it already is.

Paint the asphalt chips/kidney stones matte white!

:D

Might have time...

They already have pigment {rgb 1}... The fact that they look that colour
is some kind of lighting issue. :-(

No phong.

Specular is 0.5; roughness (and brilliance) are both at default.

(And for the record, colour = rgb 1.)

try specular 1 roughness 0.0002 (if you still have time)

Should give them a bit more gleam

OK, well... I just submitted my entry!

Never done this before... kinda scary...

Made minor adjustments to the image:
* Flame is bigger. (Not sure it looks better this way, actually.)
* Ice is more shiny now. (Not drastically.)

I guess you'll all have to wait until the voting opens to see it...

Proportionately, your original flame was just about to... disappear.

In RL, it needed to be big... ger.

Yep, only another twenty days to go... ;)
