Well, this is it, nearly... Render time for this lower res version was
nearly 3 days, and you'll notice a strange red error where the volcano
touches the water and some media artefacts under water.
I currently have a higher res one rendering on my PC at work with those bugs
fixed, though it's possible that one won't finish in time for the deadline.
That would be a shame because this lower res one loses a lot of the fine
details.
Anyway, thanks for all the input! Hopefully most people who made suggestions
can see them integrated into this scene, making this probably the most
complex scene I've ever created!
Comments still welcome, though obviously it's too late to change anything
now!

I don't think you need to change anything - VERY realistic. A high-res
render would really be nice to see. Almost photo quality, IMHO. VERY well
done.

This is an awesome picture, tek! I can well imagine it to be one of your
most complex ones. I think you have succeded on all aspects and it may well
be another milestone in povray rendering.
Congratulations! It's a winner, I believe.

Only things that I can find the slightests distraction in are the straight,
ribbonlike lava flow in the centre channel and maybe a little too greenish,
instead of a more blueish, hue in the underwater part. But I am picking
nits.

The water colour has bugged me all along, I tried turquoise tropical water
but that looked wierd with the snow, brownish lake water but that looked
terrible, transparent water didn't contrast enough with the rest of the
scene... I settled on greenish blue because it looks as good as any other
option I tried and helps distinguish it's palette from the other parts of
the scene. I like it, but I have a feeling there could be something better.
Regarding the lava flow, I see what you mean but I don't have enough control
over my lava macro or volcano shape to adjust one area without screwing up
the nice S-bend further down the mountain. It's good enough and I just did
have enough time to refine it any more :)

Like I said, those are very minor issues, otherwise it's an excellent image
and I very much enjoyed following its progression.
BTW, has anybody done an olympic theme for this round?

Here's a more final final version! I've just fixed the aforementioned red
line and water-media errors.
Now all I hope is the high res version will finish before midnight
tuesday...

Bravo!!
Here's my late two-cents-worth of comments (and speaking strictly
personally...)
From your webite images of the entire process, I would have preferred a
combination of WIP 024 and your final; there's something about the
atmosphere around the top of the volcano in 024 that I just like--probably
because it shows off the air glow a bit better. Though the dry, clear air
in such a location *is* more realistic, I guess.
Now, keep that computer humming...and don't let the power go out! ;-)
