Well I've been putting a lot of work into the volcano, though I've hardly
touched anything else in the scene. As you can see I've incorporated a lot
of the great suggestions from folks round here, thanks everyone! The only
problems I have with the volcano now are: it's still too dark - I didn't
realise until after this lengthy render, and there's lava touching snow in
the foreground which is obviously complete nonsense! Next I'm going to work
on the smoke and under-sea area.
My favourite bit in this is the lava rivers, which work using a really
simplistic particle system that basically rolls a particle down the volcano
leaving a trail of blobs behind it. Slight adjustments to the start position
and random seed make it take radically different paths, which actually looks
pretty realistic.
Anyway I thought I'd post this for further comments, and so you can see how
much better it's got!

This just keeps getting better and better. My suggestion (worth every
penny) would be to scrap the undersea section, extend the water to the
bottom of the picture, and add some icebergs or a frozen shoreline.
You've just about got the "fire" part working but I think the "ice" part
needs work.
Awesome picture!

The top part is starting to look half way decent now. The mountain looks
good, the clouds are good, the lava isn't quite right yet. (Good shape,
lighting looks wrong.)
The underwater part still needs work.

That's a neat trick. It might look more realistic if the lava streams were
brighter maybe?

Coming along neatly, but ( sorry, there's always one of those ) :)
4 things above the water that caught my eye
No distinct column of smoke/dust/ash over the vent
The boulders/rocks that come flying out of the volcano all are(look like)
the same size.
No smoke/dust plumes where they hit the ground
No steam where the lava touches the water
under water
The bulging lava doesn't seem connected to the volcano

It's great to see this progressing so nicely. Really dig those clouds.
How about an "air glow" above the volcano's spout? And perhaps some more
yellow (and/or "crustiness") in the lave streams? As lava cools, it shows
dark crusty spots on top.
Thanks for keeping us updated!

I'd expect the lava streams to be broader at the bottom of the mountain.
And I love Spock's idea with the ice on the water instead of the cooling
lava.
Aside from that - Great progress!

Ok, forget my earlier comments partly. I'm still disturbed about that
there's _one_ glowing lava drop underwater, but not another even near.
And the mountains at background are still exported from Egypt :). All
other things I mentioned you seem to have maintained with honour.
But maybe there should be steam (and boiling?), where the lava river
gets into the water?

Weirdly, when lava hits water, it doesn't seem to boil much. Just tones
of steam. (Which is maybe why you can't see any bubbling?) Strange but
true...
I rephrase: in the videos I've seen, that's how it looks.
PS. Every time I see "lava" I keep thinking "Java"... I need help!!

Probably because boiling involves small abouts of water changing to steam
beneath the surface and bubbling to the surface. When lava (few hundred
degrees C) hits water the water turns en-mass to steam instantly. There
isn't time to boil.
My guess, not scientific proof.
